Ghana Mourns: Legendary Highlife Musician Daddy Lumba Passes Away at 60

Ghana is in mourning following the death of one of its most beloved and iconic musicians, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba. The highlife legend passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at The Bank Hospital in Cantonments, Accra, after a brief illness. He was 60 years old.

The sad news was officially confirmed by his family through a statement signed by their legal representative, Fati Ali Yallah. His death has sent shockwaves across the nation and beyond, prompting an outpouring of grief, tributes, and heartfelt reflections from fans, fellow musicians, and political leaders alike.

Daddy Lumba was more than a musician—he was a cultural institution. Born on September 29, 1964, in Nsuta-Amangoase in the Ashanti Region, his musical journey began in the 1980s and blossomed into one of the most successful careers in Ghana’s music history. With over 33 albums to his name, Daddy Lumba revolutionized the highlife genre with his signature blend of soulful melodies, storytelling lyrics, and unmistakable vocal style. His hit songs—such as “Aben Wo Ha,” “Yentie Obiaa,” “Theresa,” and “Sika Asem”—became anthems for generations and cemented his status as one of the most influential musicians in Africa.

Throughout his career, he remained consistent, releasing timeless music that addressed themes of love, betrayal, hardship, celebration, and faith. His ability to blend personal experience with broader social commentary made his music deeply relatable and emotionally resonant. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo described Daddy Lumba as a “national treasure” whose music served as the soundtrack to the lives of countless Ghanaians. The family has opened a Book of Condolence at his residence in Accra, on Kinshasa Crescent, starting Tuesday, July 29, 2025, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. A candlelight vigil is scheduled for Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Independence Square, where thousands are expected to gather to pay tribute to the man who gave Ghana some of its most enduring and beloved songs. Full funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.

Though he faced health challenges in the latter part of his life, Daddy Lumba remained active in music, continuing to inspire with new songs and performances. His humility, resilience, and dedication to his craft have left a permanent mark on the nation’s artistic landscape.
